February’s Workshop ! ! !
Hello GODS Peoples!!!
Hope yous is all fly…. ? we r comin’ at you with some more exciting G.O.D.S news….. ! !
Firstly we wanna say a massive thank you to Filomenna and Jayne for their Taranta workshop in January!!! It was a wonderful day packed with things to take away with you, it was great to learn the steps of an old tradition and to explore both the trance and healing element of this dance form! So a big warm thanks to them. And a big thanks to all of you for coming down too….it was so busy!!! And really nice to see some new faces!
So……next up……we have ….
Argentinian Tango…..! ! !
Led by Dominika and John.
Sunday 24th Feburary
2.30pm - 4pm
@ Kinning Park Complex
on 40 Cornwall street…. easiest way to get there is the tube to ‘Kinning Park’ stop…and its just there! Big red brick building.
Argentine Tango is an improvised dance which originated in Buenos Aires in mid to late 19th century. Not to be mistaken for ballroom Tango, which is very different! It’s a dance where two people connect and become one…, a form of ‘dialog’/partnership, where you build trust in one another to make it work well and to be enjoyable. We teach authentic Argentine Tango with classic steps - simple, yet elegant, with a friendly approach, which in turn has created a warm atmosphere! They say - anyone who can walk, can do tango at any age, any time…. can’t dance, won’t dance - all welcome!!!
P.S - Argentine Tango has recently started being used as a marital therapy! (apparently cheaper than divorce lawyer’s fees!)
For anyone who is really keen to learn Tango on a weekly basis, Dominika and John currently teach in Glasgow University Union on a Sundays from 7pm until 8pm, both students and non students welcome.
Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes, not boots or trainers if you have them!!!
GREAT!
See you all there we hope!
Big love

January’s G.O.D.S ! ! ! + Happy 2013 ! ! !
Hello lovely GODS peoples!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL! …. We made it….2013 ! ! !….. the world didn’t end! YUS! !!!!!
We hope that the festive period was wonderful and joyous for you all! We are very happy to be back and to be beginning the new year with more wonderful dancing…especially in January….with cold bones and big belly’s…we all need to do some moving!
Next up…we have another incredibly exciting event ……… January’s workshop is …..
Taranta Dance led by Filomenna and Jayne
Saturday 26th January
11 AM - 2 PM
CCA 5 , Glasgow!
All ages welcome and free for all.
“The dance tradition called Taranta (or Pizzica ) originated in the region of Salento (Puglia) but has deep and ancient roots in Ancient Greece ( of which the South of Italy was a part) with ramifications farther a field in the Mediterranean Cultures and especially the Arab Africa.
This dance was used as a ‘cure’ for different forms of unhappiness and emotional distress. Those afflicted by these where said to have been bitten by a poisonous spider (Tarantula) and therefore needed to be treated by way of dancing to rhythms and sounds appropriate to the type of spider they had been bitten by, so that the poison could be expelled through their movements, heat and emotional release. Alongside this, a folk, community dance tradition has developed which these days, is danced in festivals, parties and community events in many different styles throughout all the Southern regions of Italy.
We will also introduce the healing tradition that is rooted in the dance by exploring some aspects of it through a shamanic perspective. Shamanism is one of the most ancient traditions known to mankind. It’s roots are found all over the world and are based in the idea that everything has a ‘life energy’ including animals, trees, rivers and mountains, and that as we dance through life we share our worlds as caretakers for the planet. The healing aspects of Shamanism share some of the ancient roots of the Taranta and you will be guided to ‘journey’ with the drum to relax, restore and re balance after experiencing the world of the Taranta dance.
In our workshop we will learn the basic steps of this vibrant folk dance-to-the-drum in the style of Salento and create a circle dance ‘party’ to ignite and reawaken our vital and creative energy.
Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes, the floor in the CCA is nice though so barefoot is definetly an option.
Also if you have a scarf that you really like, or a piece of fabric that resembles a scarf or a shawl that is your favourite colour or something…then please bring it along to the workshop! If you have lots of scarves, perhaps you could bring a few, just in case others don’t have one. Also, no worries if you don’t have any…. We will bring lots ! ! !
GREAT!
That’s all folks…we hope to see lots of you there… its going to be wonderful!
much love always from your gods team,
Romany, Julia and Ashanti!!!

September GODS!
Hello Gods ! ! !
First up…wanna say a huge huge thanks to Monica and Jer for August’s Contact Improv workshop…….It made what could have been scary, feel very easy. Monica is a great teacher who provided us with the ideal amount of guidance and freedom at the same time. And Jer had great sensibilities towards the room full of dancers….. jumping and running in extremes/ slow fast/hard/soft is incredibley invigorating! Many thanks!
And secondly Happy summer to you all ! AND most importantly HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO Y’ALL ! !
Yep, that’s right..its Glasgow Open Dance School’s first birthday - this September! We are all officially ONE YEAR OLD ! ! ! …….. wahooooooo! Congratulations to you ALL! We are going to have to celebrate!……details of this will be coming at you real soon!
BUT….Next up, we have a very exciting event … September’s workshop will be lead by Ashanti Harris! And it is also G.O.D.S’s first official field trip!
“Earth Dances and Movement Rituals” , Sunday 16th! 10 AM ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Here are some words from Ashanti about the event……
The workshop I am devising is a combination of Anne Halprins’s ‘Movement Ritual’s’ and instructions from ‘Body, Space, Image - Notes towards improvisation and performance’ by the dancer Miranda Tufnell and the performance artist and researcher Chris Crickmay.
The sections taken from Anne Halprin’s ‘Movement Ritual’s’ will make us more aware of our kinaesthetic senses through activating and isolating our senses in general.
The sections taken from ‘Body,Space,Image’ will be a combination of working individually and collectively to create different movements and dances that respond to an instruction or score. We will make our own scores and then share them and then find ways to move together.
This is not a dance class or even a workshop, more like an experience. An invitation for people to come and move together in a beautiful place that is filled with it’s own movements, that can shape ours. We will be tall like the trees, we will breath with the wind and we will grow upwards into the sky.
The Details:
Sunday 16th September!
We will travel to Wiston Lodge (www.wistonlodge.co.uk) which is in South Lanarkshire, near a town called Biggar. We are hiring a bus that will pick everyone up from central Glasgow early Sunday morning at 10am. The bus will take us all to Wiston, (roughly an hours drive) where the workshop will take place…rain or shine, we will move with the elements ! ! !
Because we are hiring a vehicle, places to this event are unfortunately limited…so if you are up for it…and we hope lots of you are! Then please RSVP to us ASAP! We imagine this event will take up a large part of the day, we will be back in Glasgow by 5pm the very latest. Its gonna be EPIC!
Once we have an idea of how many of you are joining us…we will email with a definite pick up time and location!
And please do get in touch with us if you have any questions at all……
We hope to see lots of you in a few weeks!
…. details of G.O.D.S FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY EXTRAVAGANZA BASH WILL FOLLOW VERY SOON ! ! !
MUCH LOVE TO YOU ALL
